Language service for Visual Studio for googles protobuf specifications.

Now moved to Github

This repository will not be maintained and there will be no commits anymore.

This Visual Studio Language Service supports googles protobuf definitions in the following ways:
  • Brace Matching
  • Code Completion
  • Highlight Word
  • Outlining
  • Quickinfo
  • Syntax Coloring
The syntax coloring is now based on my own parser.

The standard colors are used for syntax highlighting with the exception of the Enum field-names. You can set the colors in Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Fonts and Colors. The name of the colors all starts with protobuf.

Errors are shown in the protobuf section of the output pane and in the error pane with line and column number. You can double click to go directly to the syntax error. All found syntax errors will be shown.

The binaries can be downloaded from the Visual Studio Gallery at or inside Visual Studio via Tools -> Extensions and Updates. Search for Protobuf.

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to ask.

The initial design for protocol buffers is aimed at Java, C++ and Python developers. Marc Gravell, a developer for Stack Exchange/Stack Overflow has designed and implemented protocol buffers in C#. You can find it here:
